What about coming out as genderqueer and being guaranteed verbal harassment for the next two years would make me your hero?

guaranteed? really?

you’d be the bravest gal around. i think that qualifies you as hero material, no?

I have some serious thoughts about ‘coming out’…and one of them is that ‘straight people’ don’t have to announce to the world that they’re straight…and in that line of thought, you shouldn’t hide your genderqueerness, but if someone approaches you about it, what would you say?

I love your 40-something coworker's thoughts on body hair. It's a personal choice and no one else has anything to do with it. And your 30-something coworker's too. I really like my hairy legs. I have nothing against shaved legs (they feel pretty damn smooth when freshly shaved and it IS nice), I just prefer not shaving. I think I'm going to bring that up: if men don't do it, why should we? If my dad questions THAT, then I'll bring up the old 'what is masculine? what is feminine?' argument and ask why we're still adhering to those old rules.

she’s the best. I feel so lucky to have people like her in my life. I’m actually sitting next to her now at work and we listened to that nicki minaj song I posted, because it’s still stuck in my head. anyways afterwards we were catching up on current events and me, living in the bubble that I do, did not know about the Chilean mine incident but DID know about Paris Hilton being arrested for coke. Her response: ‘shawty, that is NOT ill’. She and her husband also met us for really, really gay karaoke Friday night and the gay bar and had a BLAST.

anywho… people don’t even want to expand their thinking on stuff like this. sometimes they dont even TRY to argue…probably because seriously, how can you argue what someone does with their leg hair? people that I’m close to who disagree with it- mainly relatives- are DEEPLY offended by it though. which baffles me.

Body Hair
  • Dad: Shave your legs!
  • Me: No.
  • Dad: Why not?
  • Me: I don't see the point.
  • Dad: It's smoother and it feels good.
  • Me: So why don't you?
  • Dad: Because I'm a man!
  • Me: [unsure of how to reply]
  • yes yes yes! this is exactly where i'm at <3
  • responses I have gotten when exploring the idea of not shaving:
  • little brother (age 18): "I'm accepting of the whole, 'gay thing', but come on do you really have to make a statement about everything?"
  • me: "it's not about my sexuality, and it's truly unnecessary, in my opinion"
  • little brother: "well neither is whipping my ass. so I'm going to stop doing that around you if you quit shaving your legs"
  • roommate (age 22): "so you're like, a super dyke now?"
  • me: "why do you shave your legs?"
  • roommate: "it makes me feel pretty"
  • coworker (age 22): "I dunno, I'm just not sure I would be okay with that"
  • me: "well, why do you shave your legs? men don't do it? why do we?"
  • coworker: "I don't know, it's just natural. wait...I mean...it's unnatural, but....I don't know!"
  • ---
  • coworker (age 40 somethin'): [when posing the question of having unshaven legs as professional/unprofessional] "I don't think that it's professional OR unprofessional. it's personal and therefore is neither of those things. I think that society wants women to look infantile and therefore less equal with men."
  • friend and coworker (age 30 something): [when mentioning my desire to quit shaving] "really! me too! I feel sexier with all that hair there, even though it's dark and think. It's natural, and primal and feels right and that is sexy to me"
  • lover (age 24/doesn't shave): "fall is the best time for hairy legs. the more hair the better" <3
  • 2 good friends at the bar (20 somethings): "I shaved my legs 4 times this summer" and "yeah I shaved twice. 'cause it was hot"
  • ----
  • bottom line: people have SERIOUS thoughts and opinions about my body hair.

A white woman, about 51 years old, was seated next to a black man on an airplane. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air hostess. "Madam, what is the matter?" the hostess asked. "You obviously do not see it," she responded. "You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat." "Be calm please," the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available." The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later. "Mam, I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class." Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued, "It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting." The hostess turned to the black man and said "Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in first class." At that moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.
